Vice Presidential Candidate number one, Muhaimin Iskandar, stated that Indonesia is not serious in handling new and renewable energy (NRE) due to a reduction in previously set targets.
He made this statement during the fourth series of the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate themed *Sustainable Development, Natural Resources, Environment, Energy, Food, Agrarian, Indigenous Communities and Villages* at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, on Sunday (21/1/2024).
During the Q&A session, Muhaimin Iskandar, also known as Cak Imin, responded to a statement by Vice Presidential Candidate number two, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, regarding the government's perceived lack of seriousness in achieving NRE targets.
"Indeed, carbon tax is not the only important thing to prepare for in the NRE transition. Unfortunately, the government's commitment today is not serious. The NRE target, which should have been 23% in 2025, has been reduced to 17%," said Cak Imin.
Cak Imin's statement aligns with the statement from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
The government set a target of 23% for the NRE mix by 2025. However, the National Energy Council (DEN) revealed that the national NRE target will be revised to the range of 17-19%. This target was revised through an update of the National Energy Policy (KEN).
Then, the DEN drafted a revision of Presidential Regulation (PP) Number 79 of 2014 concerning the National Energy Policy, adjusting to changes in the strategic environment in line with climate change commitments and accommodating efforts for energy transition towards carbon neutrality by 2060.
"The target was 23% in 2025. In the updated KEN, once it's approved and signed by the President, it will change to 17-19%," said the Head of the Energy Policy Facilitation Bureau in his press conference, as reported by *Katadata*, Wednesday (17/1/2024).
Yunus stated that the change in target is intended to ensure that the NRE target is still achievable, even in the lowest scenario.
"If we achieve the low scenario, that's good. The KEN guides the path within its corridor," he said.
