Kompas Research and Development Reports Improved Public Image of the Indonesian National Police Following Drop Due to Members' Legal Cases

A survey by *Kompas* Research and Development (Litbang *Kompas*) indicates that the public image of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) is recovering after a decline in the two previous survey periods. Currently, 61.6% of respondents view the institution positively (May 2023).

Meanwhile, 29.1% reported a negative perception, while 9.4% responded "don't know/didn't answer."

Compared to January 2023, Litbang *Kompas* notes an 11.7% increase in positive perception of the Polri, considered a significant rise.

"The Polri is the only institution to achieve an increase of over 10%, compared to the 12 other institutions included in the *Kompas* survey," wrote the Litbang *Kompas* team in a report published by *Kompas.id* on Monday, May 22, 2023.

Litbang *Kompas* attributes the decline in Polri's image in October 2022 and January 2023 to several incidents, including the Kanjuruhan stadium disaster; the premeditated murder orchestrated by former Head of the Internal Affairs Division (Propam) Ferdy Sambo; and the drug abuse case involving former West Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Teddy Minahasa.

Prior to this, the Polri enjoyed a positive trend from August 2020 to January 2022, consistently maintaining above 70% positive perception, according to Litbang *Kompas*. The highest rating, 78.7%, was achieved in April 2021, when General Listyo Sigit Prabowo's team actively addressed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The provision of social assistance, public facilities, and the firm enforcement of community activity restrictions (PPKM) in several regions contributed to a positive image for the Polri," the authors stated.

The survey involved 1,200 randomly selected respondents using a stratified systematic sampling method across 38 provinces in Indonesia.

The margin of error is approximately 2.83% with a 95% confidence level. Data was collected from April 29 to May 10, 2023. The survey was fully funded by Harian *Kompas* (PT Kompas Media Nusantara).
