Ten Provinces Still Below SMA Participation Target

In 2016, 10 provinces had yet to achieve the target Net Participation Rate (NPR) for Upper Secondary Education (SMA). The government's target for SMA participation was 58.03 percent. The 2016 People's Welfare Indicator released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed that Papua was the furthest from the target. The NPR for SMA in Papua only reached 43.22 percent. West Kalimantan was second lowest with an NPR of 50.32 percent.

Other regions whose SMA NPR was still below target were Central Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, South Kalimantan, and Gorontalo. West Java, West Sulawesi, Bangka Belitung, and Banten were also below the government's target. Nevertheless, nationally, the average SMA NPR exceeded the government's target at 59.71 percent.

NPR is the percentage of children of a certain school age who are attending education at the level appropriate to their age, relative to the total number of children in the relevant school age group. NPR measures the proportion of children attending school on time.
