What is the total area of the two regencies designated for the Nusantara capital city?

The Indonesian government has decided to relocate the capital city and has chosen "Nusantara" as the name for Indonesia's new Capital City (IKN). The new capital is located within a 256,142-hectare national strategic area (KSN) in Kutai Kartanegara Regency and North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan (Kaltim).

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Kutai Kartanegara Regency covers an area of 25,988.08 square kilometers (km²) with its capital city in Tenggarong. This area constitutes approximately 20.41% of the total area of East Kalimantan, which is 127,346.94 km².

Meanwhile, North Penajam Paser Regency covers an area of 2,923.73 km² with its capital city in Penajam Paser Utara. This regency's area is only 2.3% of the total area of East Kalimantan Province.

Kutai Timur Regency is the largest regency/city in the province, with its capital in Samarinda, covering an area of 31,051.71 km² (24.38%). Conversely, Bontang City is the smallest area in East Kalimantan, covering only 163.14 km² (0.13%).

Administratively, East Kalimantan Province is divided into 7 regencies and 3 cities, comprising 103 sub-districts consisting of 841 villages and 197 urban villages. The population of East Kalimantan is 3.8 million people, recorded in 1.24 million households.
