There were no places of worship for non-Muslim communities in Cilegon City in 2021.

Cilegon Mayor Helldy Agustian and Deputy Mayor Sanuji Pentamarta's participation in signing a petition rejecting the construction of a church has drawn criticism from various groups.

The Cilegon City Local Wisdom Preservation Committee argues that the rejection is legally based on Serang Regency Head's Decree Number 189/Huk/SK1975 dated March 28, 1975. However, the Head of the Center for Interfaith Harmony (PKUB) of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Wawan Djunaedi, stated that the Serang Regent's Decree is no longer relevant.

"The 1975 Serang Regent's Decree is no longer relevant as a basis for rejecting the establishment of a church," said Wawan, as reported by iNews on Friday (9/9/2022).

Currently, the guideline for maintaining interfaith harmony is the Joint Regulation of the Minister of Religious Affairs and the Minister of Home Affairs Number 9 of 2006 and Number 8 of 2006 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of Duties of Regional Heads/Deputy Regional Heads in Maintaining Interfaith Harmony, Empowering the Interfaith Harmony Forum, and the Establishment of Places of Worship.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there are 768 Muslim places of worship in Cilegon City. This includes 381 mosques and 387 prayer rooms (mushola). As of 2021, there were no places of worship for followers of other religions.

This data indicates that non-Muslim residents of Cilegon City must go to other areas to worship according to their religion/belief. However, every Indonesian citizen is guaranteed the freedom to embrace their religion/belief and to worship according to their religion/belief, as stated in Article 29 of the 1945 Constitution.
