Yogyakarta Has the Highest Gender Development Index in Indonesia

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a Gender Development Index (GDI) score of 94.80 points for Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) in 2020. This was the highest among all Indonesian provinces.

The GDI achievement in DIY indicates the smallest gap in human development between men and women compared to other provinces. The Human Development Index (HDI) for women in DIY was 78.46 points, while the HDI for men was 82.76 points.

Jakarta came in second with a GDI score of 94.63 points in the previous year. North Sulawesi followed with a GDI score of 94.42 points.

West Sumatra and Bali recorded GDI scores of 94.17 and 93.79 points respectively. Riau Islands followed with a GDI score of 93.31 points.

Papua had the lowest GDI score at 79.59 points. West Papua followed with a GDI score of 82.91 points.

The Gender Development Index (GDI) is an indicator that reflects the comparison of achievements between the Female Human Development Index (HDI) and the Male HDI. A score of 100 is the standard for interpreting the GDI, as 100 represents the most perfect comparative ratio.

The smaller the difference between the GDI score and 100, the more equitable the development between women and men. Conversely, the larger the difference between the GDI score and 100, the greater the difference in development achievements between women and men.
