Sharp Increase in Traffic Accident Victims in 2022: Here's the Trend

Based on a report from the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), the number of road traffic accident victims in Indonesia reached 204,447 in 2022. This figure represents a 33% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to 2021, when there were 153,732 victims.

The number of accident victims in 2022 was the highest in the last four years. A breakdown shows that the majority of victims suffered minor injuries (163,686), followed by fatalities (27,531) and serious injuries (12,230).

Prior to 2022, the highest number of road traffic accident victims occurred in 2019, reaching 175,488. This comprised 25,671 fatalities, 12,475 serious injuries, and 130,571 minor injuries.

The number decreased in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led the government to restrict public mobility to curb the spread of the virus.

The number of accident victims during that period was recorded at 147,798. This included 23,529 fatalities, 10,751 serious injuries, and 113,518 minor injuries. This was the lowest number in the last four years.

In response to the high number of traffic accident victims in Indonesia, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi issued Presidential Regulation Number 1 of 2022 concerning the National General Plan for Road Traffic and Transportation Safety (RUNK LLAJ) on January 3, 2022.

"This regulation serves as a reference for Ministries/Agencies, Provincial Governments, and District/City Governments in synergizing the formulation of planning documents, implementation, and control of road transportation," said Budi.
