Countries Most Affected by Terrorism in 2023

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has again measured the global terrorism index in 2023. The report, titled the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), examines the countries most affected by terrorist acts committed by various groups.

Afghanistan ranks first as the most affected country, with a score of 8.822 points. This is a decrease from the 9.109 points recorded in 2022.

Throughout 2022, two fatal terrorist attacks occurred in Afghanistan. The first, a bombing in Balkh Province on April 21, 2022, resulted in 50 deaths and 100 injuries.

Second is Burkina Faso, with a score of 8.564 points, an increase from 8.270 in 2022.

Third is Somalia, with a score of 8.463, also an increase from 8.398 points in the previous year.

Regarding Indonesia, the IEP reports a score of 5.502 points, placing it 24th in the medium zone.

The IEP's research calculates the GTI score based on four indicators: the number of incidents, deaths, injuries, and hostages resulting from terrorist acts.

The GTI scale ranges from 0 to 10, where 0 indicates no impact from terrorism, and 10 represents the highest impact. The GTI analyzes the impact of terrorism in 163 countries, encompassing 99.7% of the world's population.
