10 Most Comfortable Cities for Cycling: Where Does Jakarta Rank?

According to the 2022 Global Bicycle Cities Index, the most bicycle-friendly city is Utrecht, the oldest city in the Netherlands.

The Global Bicycle Cities Index analyzes cycling conditions in 90 cities worldwide using six key indicators: weather, cycling trends, safety and security, infrastructure quality, bicycle rental/leasing facilities, and supporting cycling events such as car-free days, etc.

According to the index, about 51% of Utrecht residents regularly use bicycles in their daily lives. The city also boasts excellent cycling infrastructure, earning a score of 77.84 out of 100 – the highest among all surveyed cities.

Munster ranks second with a score of 65.93 points. This German city excels in cycling safety and security, as evidenced by low bicycle theft rates and minimal accidents.

Jakarta received a score of 21.66 and ranked 85th out of 90 surveyed cities. This score is relatively low but still better than Lagos, Nigeria, which ranked last with a score of 11.81.
