Papua Has the Nation's Highest Percentage of Christian Adherents

Papua is the Indonesian province with the highest percentage of Christians. More than half of the population of this "Land of the Birds of Paradise" practices Christianity.

Based on data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), there were 2.99 million Christians in Papua in June 2021. This number represents 69.54% of its total population of 4.31 million.

North Sulawesi is second, with 62.98% of its population being Christian. West Papua follows with 54.01% of its population practicing Christianity.

The percentage of Christians in Maluku and East Nusa Tenggara is 39.42% and 36.18%, respectively. In North Sumatra, 26.9% of the population is Christian.

North Maluku has 24.97% of its population practicing Christianity. Meanwhile, the percentage of Christians in North Kalimantan is 19.87%, Central Kalimantan 16.66%, and Central Sulawesi 16.31%.

Christianity is the second largest religion in Indonesia, with 20.47 million adherents in June 2021. This amounts to 7.49% of Indonesia's population of 272.23 million.

Islam remains the largest religion in Indonesia, with 236.53 million adherents or 86.88% of the total population.
