Rakuten Insight Global research found that three out of five surveyed Asian citizens keep pets. The team compiled several motivations behind pet ownership.

The most prominent motivation was stress and depression reduction, chosen by 41% of respondents.

The desire for companionship and a sense of security was also a top motivation, selected by an equal proportion of 36%.

The desire for increased physical activity followed as the next highest motivation, chosen by 26% of respondents. This was followed by the desire to share enjoyment with a partner, selected by 22% of respondents. The remaining motivations are included in the attached graph.

Overall, Rakuten Insight reported that more than half, or 59%, of respondents keep pets at home, although there were significant differences across countries.

While in Indonesia, more respondents kept cats (47%), this differed from the Philippines, where more respondents kept dogs (67%).

The proportion of dog owners among Filipino respondents was the highest among the surveyed countries. Vietnam followed with 53% of respondents owning dogs.

This survey involved 97,000 respondents spread across China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Data was collected in January 2021 using an online method from Rakuten Insight's proprietary panel.
