287 Suicides Reported in Indonesia by Early 2024, Highest Number in Central Java

Based on data from the Indonesian National Police's National Criminal Information Center (Pusiknas), there were 287 suicide cases in Indonesia between January 1 and March 15, 2024.

Based on reporting location, the most suicide cases during this period occurred in Central Java, with 97 cases, equivalent to 33.78% of the national total.

Next, there were 47 suicide cases in East Java and 31 similar cases in Bali during the same period.

The following is a list of the top 10 provinces with the most reported suicide cases from January 1 to March 15, 2024, at 3:30 PM WIB:

1. Central Java: 97 cases
2. East Java: 47 cases
3. Bali: 31 cases
4. North Sumatra: 16 cases
5. West Java: 11 cases
6. Yogyakarta Special Region: 10 cases
7. Bengkulu: 9 cases
8. West Kalimantan: 8 cases
9. Lampung: 8 cases
10. South Kalimantan: 7 cases

The Indonesian National Police also noted that most suicide cases occurred in residential areas (233 cases). There were 27 cases in plantations and 7 cases in rice paddies.

This data was compiled from reports received by regional police (Polda) in each area.

According to the Indonesian Suicide Prevention Association, the number of reported suicide cases may be lower than the actual number of incidents.

"Due to stigma and potential social impact, families may not report it if their loved one has committed suicide," they stated on their official website.

"Furthermore, Indonesia does not yet have a death registry that reports data accurately, so suicide case data is not fully recorded," they continued.
