ASEAN Countries Become Top Destinations for Indonesian Tourists

Based on the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) report titled *2022 National Tourist Statistics*, Indonesian national tourists' (wisnas) main destinations were dominated by neighboring countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

Trips by Indonesian national tourists primarily to ASEAN countries accounted for 47.51% of total outbound trips in 2022.

"The high frequency of trips to the ASEAN region is due to the relatively short distance, resulting in lower transportation costs," wrote the BPS in its report.

Despite its dominance, the percentage has been declining year-on-year (YoY). In the previous period (2021), it reached 50.27%.

Malaysia and Singapore were the top destinations for Indonesian national tourists in ASEAN, accounting for 18.56% and 18.05%, respectively.

The BPS added that the high intensity of Indonesian national tourists traveling to Malaysia and Singapore is influenced by the close proximity and the availability of adequate transportation.

Countries in the Middle East followed in second place as the main destination for Indonesian national tourists, with a percentage of 27.24%.

Countries in Asia outside of ASEAN and Europe ranked next, with proportions of 10.93% and 8.94%, respectively. Other countries accounted for 5.38%.
