Wamena is a district in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Province. This area, covering 110.85 square kilometers, is also the capital of Jayawijaya.
In 2018, Wamena's population was 41,000, or one-fifth of Jayawijaya's total population of 215,000. This makes Wamena the most populous district/sub-district. Jayawijaya's population density is 25-26 people per square kilometer, with an average of 4 people per household. In contrast, Wamena's population density reaches 371-328 people per square kilometer.

For information, Wamena was hit by riots on Monday, September 23, 2019, resulting in more than 30 deaths and dozens of injuries. Hundreds of houses, shops, and government offices were damaged and burned by the mob.
