Depok was ranked as the least tolerant city in Indonesia based on 2021 research by the Setara Institute.
This research uses a scoring system with a scale of 1-7. The higher the score, the better the tolerance level is considered.
Depok received a score of 3.577 out of 7. This is the lowest score among the 94 cities across Indonesia that were studied.
The Setara Institute used four variables with eight indicators to measure the level of tolerance, including:
* City Government Regulations: Development plans in the form of RPJMD (Regional Medium-Term Development Plan) and other supporting legal products, as well as discriminatory policies.
* Government Actions: Statements by key officials regarding intolerance incidents and concrete actions taken in response.
* Social Regulations: Intolerance incidents and civil society dynamics related to intolerance incidents.
* Religious Demography: Religious heterogeneity of the population and religious social inclusion.
Quoting CNN Indonesia, Thursday (31/3), Setara Institute Executive Director Ismail Hasani explained that the main problem making Depok the least tolerant city is discriminatory legal products. In addition, the Mayor of Depok is considered not to promote tolerance.
The intolerance in Depok is considered to be influenced by a segregation process that has occurred over the past 20 years.
One example of segregation in Depok is the arrangement of public spaces based on religion, such as the development of residential areas specifically for certain religions.
