West Sumatra, Province with the Highest Rate of Immoral Crimes in Indonesia

In 2015, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded West Sumatra as the province with the highest number of sexual crimes in Indonesia, totaling 369 cases. South Sulawesi was second with 306 cases. The provinces with the fewest cases were Yogyakarta Special Region and Papua, with 43 and 12 cases respectively.

According to the Operations Control Bureau of the Indonesian National Police Headquarters, as cited by BPS, of the 369 sexual crimes in West Sumatra, 67 were rape cases and 302 were acts of molestation. Meanwhile, sexual crimes in South Sulawesi comprised 95 rape cases and 211 cases of molestation.

The number of sexual crimes (rape and molestation) in Indonesia in 2015 slightly decreased compared to 2014. After reaching 5,499 cases in 2014, it was reduced to 5,051 cases in 2015. Several factors contribute to social problems such as sexual crimes, including economic conditions and a decline in moral values. Many sexual offenders are increasingly daring due to weak moral and religious education.
