These Are the 15 Countries with the Greatest Reductions in Extreme Poverty, 2000-2015

The World Bank targets a reduction of extreme poverty to below 3% by 2030. As we know, the world has made remarkable progress in reducing extreme poverty since 1990. Extreme poverty here refers to a population living in a household with per capita consumption or income below the extreme poverty line of US$1.9 per day (2011 PPP).

As shown in the graph, among 15 countries, Tanzania has been most successful in suppressing extreme poverty from approximately 2000-2015. This African nation reduced extreme poverty by 36.1 percentage points to 49.1% in 2015 from 86% in 2000, or an average of 3.2 percentage points per year. Countries that also successfully reduced extreme poverty rates include Tajikistan (-3.1 percentage points), Chad (3.1 percentage points), and the Republic of Congo (2.7 percentage points). On average, about 1.6% of the population in these 15 countries escaped extreme poverty each year.

Indonesia is also among the 15 countries that have successfully reduced extreme poverty, at an average rate of -2.1 percentage points per year. The number of Indonesians classified as extremely poor decreased by 64.5 million to 18.5 million in 2015, compared to 83 million in 2000.
