Data Check: Anies Mentions the KM 50 Tragedy, How Many Extrajudicial Killings Are There?

Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan questioned the resolution of the KM 50 tragedy, in which six members of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) were killed by police gunfire on the Cikampek Toll Road, Kilometer 50.

This question was raised during the first Presidential Election Debate (Debat Pilpres) held at the KPU office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (12/12/2023), with the theme of Governance, Law, Human Rights, Corruption Eradication, Strengthening Democracy, Improvement of Public Services, and Community Harmony.

Anies stated, "There are two events that have attracted attention and need to be discussed, namely Kanjuruhan and KM 50. Legal processes have been underway, but a sense of justice has not emerged and many questions remain; the victims' families are still questioning it," he said.

The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) classified the KM 50 incident as extrajudicial killing.

According to data from the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), from 2018-2020, there were 216 recorded cases classified as extrajudicial killings, with a total of 305 fatalities.

Specifically in 2020, there were 44 recorded cases of extrajudicial killing with a total of 46 fatalities. Six of these victims were from the KM 50 incident.

In 2021, Amnesty International recorded 33 cases of extrajudicial killing with a total of 27 victims.
