Gregoria Mariska Wins Japan Masters 2023: How Much is the Prize Money?

The 2023 Kumamoto Masters Japan concluded at the Kumamoto Prefectural Gymnasium, Japan, from November 14-19, 2023.

This badminton tournament, a BWF Super 500 level event, offered a total prize of US$420,000, approximately Rp6.4 billion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,444 per US$).

Of the 15 Indonesian representatives competing, only women's singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung emerged victorious.

The badminton player, known as Jorgi, successfully defeated Chen Yu Fei of China with a final score of 21-12, 21-12 in the final match held on Sunday, November 19, 2023.

The first game between Gregoria and Yu Fei was intense. However, after five points, Gregoria's attacks became unstoppable, leading to an 11-5 win over Yu Fei.

Then, in the next 17 minutes, Gregoria finished the first game with a score of 21-12.

Similarly, at the beginning of the second game, Gregoria and Yu Fei battled for points. However, Gregoria remained aggressive and dominated the game, scoring a final score of 21-12.

Gregoria stated that her victory was due to her skillful and calm play.

"I also benefited from Chen Yu Fei's subpar performance today. But overall, I'm satisfied with my performance today," said Gregoria in a statement on the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) website on Monday, November 20, 2023.

In this moment, Gregoria achieved two milestones. She won her first Super 500 title in her career and became the first Indonesian women's singles player to achieve this feat.

Quoting the Badminton World Federation (BWF), as the winner, Gregoria is entitled to prize money of US$31,500, or approximately Rp486.48 million.
