Kalimantan Has the Most Extensive Map of Customary Territories in Indonesia

The Indigenous Customary Territory Registration Agency (BRWA) recorded a total of 1,119 registered customary territory maps as of August 9, 2022. These maps cover an area of 20.7 million hectares (ha) spread across 29 provinces and 142 regencies/cities.

Kalimantan has the highest number of customary territory maps, totaling 476 maps covering 7.6 million ha.

Next, Sumatra has 257 customary territory maps covering 2 million ha. Sulawesi has 159 customary territory maps covering 1.6 million ha.

Maluku-Papua has 130 customary territory maps covering 8.8 million ha.

Meanwhile, Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara have the fewest customary territory maps, with only 97 maps covering 600,000 ha.

Based on registration status, 47 customary territory maps are certified, covering 634,220 ha. A further 144 customary territory maps are verified, covering 3.01 million ha.

Additionally, 923 customary territory maps are registered, covering 17.07 million ha. There are also 5 customary territory maps recorded, covering 74,260 ha.

According to Article 1 paragraph 23 of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number 9 of 2021, customary territory refers to customary land consisting of land, water, and/or waters, along with the natural resources above them, with specific boundaries, owned, utilized, and conserved generationally and sustainably to meet the livelihood needs of the community, obtained through inheritance from their ancestors or claims of ownership in the form of customary land or customary forest.
