Batik is one of Indonesia's original art and cultural expressions, recognized worldwide. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) even proclaimed batik as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia on October 2, 2009.
Therefore, it's not surprising that many batik companies are registered in Indonesia to this day. According to a report from the Ministry of Industry, there were 2,951 batik companies in Indonesia as of February 4, 2021.
Java dominates the number of batik companies in the country, with 2,631 companies, or 89.15% of the total number of batik companies in Indonesia.
Bali and Nusa Tenggara are recorded as having 186 registered batik companies. Sumatra and Kalimantan each have 90 and 34 batik companies, respectively.
Sulawesi has 6 batik companies. Meanwhile, Maluku and Papua have the fewest batik companies, with only 4.
Based on province, Central Java is recorded as the province with the most batik companies nationally, with 2,191 companies. This is followed by East Java with 176 companies and Bali with 183 companies.
