Ministry of Law and Human Rights: 2,725 Prisoners Released After Receiving Remission for Indonesia's 77th Independence Day

The Minister of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham), Yasonna H. Laoly, granted remission to 168,916 inmates and children under supervision throughout Indonesia on August 17, 2023.

The details are as follows: 166,191 inmates received Remission I, and 2,725 inmates received Remission II, resulting in their immediate release. Thus, 2,725 inmates have returned to being "free" citizens.

"On behalf of the Indonesian Government, I congratulate the correctional inmates (WBP) who received remission. Show consistent good behavior, be obedient, and comply with the provisions of the rehabilitation program. Become productive members of society and contribute to your communities," said Minister Yasonna in his remarks at the 77th Indonesian Independence Day ceremony, as reported in a press release from Kemenkumham.go.id on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.

Yasonna also urged the public to accept the returning ex-inmates back into society as fellow citizens.

"It's never too late; ultimately, you can be well-received by society, and I also hope you can fully participate in national development," said Yasonna.

The government, in the 2023 State Budget (RAPBN), allocated Rp18.6 trillion to Kemenkumham.

* Law Enforcement and Legal Services Program: Rp47,637 billion
* Human Rights Advancement and Enforcement Program: Rp18.1 billion
* Management Support Program: Rp13,776.4 billion
* Total: Rp18,595.3 billion
