According to United Nations (UN) data, Saudi Arabia had the highest birth rate among G20 member countries in 2022.
Saudi Arabia's total fertility rate (TFR) in 2022 was 2.39. This means that each woman in Saudi Arabia, on average, gives birth to two children throughout her reproductive years.
Similar to Saudi Arabia, birth rates in South Africa and Indonesia were also among the highest in the G20.
South Africa ranked second among G20 countries with the highest birth rate, with a TFR of 2.34. Indonesia ranked third with a TFR of 2.15.
South Korea had the lowest birth rate among G20 member countries in 2022, at 0.87. This means the fertility rate in the country is less than one child per woman.
According to Dudley L. Poston Jr., a sociology professor from the United States, the decline in South Korea's fertility began in the early 1960s when the government adopted economic planning programs and population and family planning programs. He continued, this included a program goal that 45% of married couples in South Korea use contraception.
"This further contributed to the decline in fertility, as many couples realized that having fewer children often leads to an improvement in family living standards," said Dudley, as reported by *The Conversation* (June 27, 2023).
He assessed that the low birth rate in South Korea results in the country losing population every year. Even Statistics Korea reported that the country lost population in the last three years, decreasing by 32,611 people in 2020, 57,118 in 2021, and 123,800 in 2022.
"If this (population decline) trend continues, and if the country does not receive millions of immigrants, South Korea's current population of 51 million will fall to below 38 million in the next four or five decades," said Dudley.
