Most Indonesian Village Heads Have a High School Education

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) notes that the majority of village heads in Indonesia are high school graduates. The percentage reached 57.54% in 2021.

Meanwhile, the percentage of village heads who are university graduates (S1) is 23.62%. There are also village heads with postgraduate education (S2/S3), accounting for 1.83%.

However, there are still some villages where the village head has less than a high school education, amounting to 17.01%.

By province, Kepulauan Riau has the highest percentage of village heads with a high school education, at 76.81%.

Gorontalo has the highest percentage of village heads with a university education (S1), at 44.75%. Meanwhile, the highest percentage of village heads with postgraduate education (S2/S3) is found in Yogyakarta Special Region, at 11.22%.

Furthermore, West Papua and Papua are the provinces with the highest percentage of village heads having less than a high school education, reaching 58.47% and 33.47% respectively. This is closely related to the limited human resources available in those villages, who generally have a lower level of education.
