Human Development Index Score in Papua Decreases in 2020

Papua's Human Development Index (HDI) score was recorded at 60.44 in 2020. This score is 11.5 points lower than the national average HDI of 71.94, making it the lowest in Indonesia.

The trend shows that Papua's HDI experienced an increase from 2010 to 2019. However, Papua's HDI score dropped by 0.4 points last year.

Furthermore, human development at the regency/city level in Papua is still uneven. Only 5 out of 29 regencies/cities in Papua are categorized as high, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Biak Numfor, Mimika, and Merauke.

The HDI score in seven regencies/cities in Papua falls into the medium category, namely Nabire, Yapen Islands, Sarmi, Keerom, Waropen, Supiori, and Boven Digoel. Meanwhile, the HDI in 17 regencies/cities in Papua falls into the low category, including Jayawijaya, Paniai, Puncak Jaya, Mappi, Asmat, Yahukimo, Pegunungan Bintang, Tolikara, Nduga, Lanny Jaya, Mamberamo Tengah, Yalimo, Puncak, Dogiyai, Intan Jaya, Deiyai, and Mamberamo Raya.

The HDI is a measure of efforts to build the quality of human life. An HDI score below 60 is categorized as low, 60-70 as medium, 70-80 as high, and above 80 as very high.
