Indonesia Ranked 4th Most Peaceful Country in Southeast Asia in 2022

Indonesia's peace index has fallen in the last year. According to the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) in its 2022 Global Peace Index (GPI) report, Indonesia dropped one rank to become the fourth most peaceful country in Southeast Asia.

Globally, Indonesia's GPI fell two ranks to 47th out of 163 surveyed countries. Indonesia received a GPI score of 1.8 this year.

Indonesia is considered not peaceful enough due to a number of factors including demonstrations, terrorism, crime rates, and political instability.

In the 2022 Global Peace Index, the IEP uses a scoring system on a scale of 1-5. The lower the score, the more peaceful the country is assumed to be.

Similar to last year, Singapore again holds the top position as the most peaceful country in Southeast Asia. Malaysia remains in second place, while Vietnam rose two ranks, displacing Indonesia.

Laos fell to fifth place this year. Positions six through ten remain unchanged, occupied by Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Myanmar, with scores as shown in the graph.

The IEP measures the most peaceful countries based on 23 indicators grouped into three main domains: ongoing conflict, safety and security, and militarization.
