10 Regencies in Central Java with the Highest Poverty Rates in March 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the number of people in Central Java living below the poverty line increased by 128,850 to 4.11 million in March 2021 compared to March 2020. Restrictions on social activities to curb the spread of the coronavirus impacted the local economy and the poverty rate.

Kebumen is the regency in Central Java with the highest poverty rate. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of poor people in the regency increased by 1,830 to 212,920 in March 2021 compared to March 2020.

In terms of percentage, the poverty rate in Kebumen Regency increased to 17.83% in March 2021, up from 17.59%. This poverty rate is higher than the Central Java poverty rate of 11.79% and is the highest among regencies/cities in Central Java.

The regencies/cities with the next highest poverty rates are Wonosobo Regency at 17.67%, followed by Brebes Regency at 17.43%, Pemalang Regency at 16.56%, and Purbalingga Regency at 16.24%.

Banjarnegara Regency also has a high poverty rate at 16.23%, followed by Rembang Regency at 15.8%, Sragen Regency at 13.83%, and Banyumas and Klaten Regencies at 13.66% and 13.49% respectively.
