Yogyakarta's Life Expectancy Highest in Indonesia in 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the Life Expectancy (LE) at birth of the population in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) reached 75.04 years in 2021. DIY's LE is the highest among all provinces in Indonesia.

The high LE in DIY is driven by improvements in the population's health quality, particularly among infants, toddlers, and women of childbearing age. This improvement in health quality is marked by the ease of access to health facilities and infrastructure, improved nutritional intake, and a decrease in the sickness rate.

The LE at birth of the DIY population has also shown an increasing trend since 2010. At that time, DIY's LE was recorded at 74.17 years and has continued to increase at an annual rate of 0.10%. DIY's LE in 2021 is even higher than the national average LE of 71.57 years.

East Kalimantan is in second place with an LE of 74.61 years, followed by Central Java with an LE of 74.46 years.

Next, West Java's LE is recorded at 73.23 years. Following that are DKI Jakarta and North Kalimantan with LEs of 73.01 years and 72.65 years respectively.

Life Expectancy at Birth (LE) is one of the indicators showing improvement in the Human Development Index (HDI). LE is defined as the average estimated number of years a person can live from birth. Furthermore, LE also reflects the health status of a community.
