Indonesia's Infant Mortality Reached 28,200 in 2020

In 2020, 28,158 Indonesian children under five years old (toddlers) died. Of this number, 20,266 toddlers (71.97%) died within the 0-28 day (neonatal) period.

5,386 toddlers (19.13%) died within the 29-day to 11-month (post-neonatal) period. Meanwhile, 2,506 toddlers (8.9%) died within the 12-59 month age range.

The majority, or 35.2%, of neonatal toddler deaths were due to low birth weight. Neonatal toddler deaths due to asphyxia accounted for 27.4%, congenital abnormalities 11.4%, infections 3.4%, neonatal tetanus 0.03%, and other causes 22.5%.

Post-neonatal toddler deaths were most commonly caused by pneumonia (14.5%). There were also post-neonatal toddler deaths due to diarrhea (9.8%), other congenital abnormalities (0.5%), neurological diseases (0.9%), and other factors (73.9%).

Meanwhile, 42.83% of toddler deaths in the 12-59 month age range were due to parasitic infections. There were also deaths in this age range due to pneumonia (5.05%), diarrhea (4.5%), drowning (0.05%), and other factors (47.41%).

To prevent toddler deaths, integrated, comprehensive, and continuous child health efforts are necessary. The government even strives for child health to be addressed from the fetal stage until the child is 18 years old.
