10 Countries with the Highest Population Growth in 2021

Syria had the highest population growth rate in the world. According to World Bank data, the population growth rate in this West Asian country reached 4.33% in 2021. As a result, the population increased to approximately 18.28 million people last year.

Nine out of the ten countries with the highest population growth rates are located in Africa. Lack of education and the prevalence of polygamy in African countries are contributing factors to this high population growth.

Nigeria had the second-highest population growth rate at 3.75%, followed by Equatorial Guinea at 3.29%, Angola at 3.2%, the Democratic Republic of Congo at 3.1%, and Burundi at 3.02%.

This is followed by Uganda with a population growth rate of 2.98%, Mali at 2.94%, Chad at 2.93%, and Tanzania at 2.91%.

Overall, the world's population increased by 72.7 million people (0.94%) to 7.84 billion in 2021.
