BNN Reveals Methamphetamine as the Most Prevalent Drug Type in Indonesia's Narcotics Cases

Last week, the public was shocked by the arrest of a high-ranking police officer, Inspector General Teddy Minahasa, in a case involving the distribution of methamphetamine.

The former West Sumatra Police Chief has now been named a suspect. The police suspect Teddy was involved in the distribution of 5 kilograms of methamphetamine. The Director of Narcotics Investigation at the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Mukti Juharsa, stated that of the 5 kilograms of methamphetamine, 3.3 kilograms have been secured by the police. The remaining 1.7 kilograms were sold by a police officer with the initials D to Kampung Bahari, North Jakarta.

According to a report by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), methamphetamine is the most frequently discovered type of drug. Throughout 2021, there were 22,950 methamphetamine-related drug cases. This was followed by 2,105 cannabis cases, 1,245 cases involving Schedule I drugs, and 697 cases involving controlled substances.

From 2009 to 2021, the BNN handled 6,894 narcotics cases, with a total of 10,715 suspects involved. The number of narcotics cases successfully handled in 2021 totaled 766, with 1,184 suspects in total.

In 2021, the highest number of narcotics cases were handled in North Sumatra, with 54 cases. This was followed by East Java with 47 cases and West Java with 41 cases.
