Samarinda City is the most populous area in East Kalimantan, with 861,880 inhabitants (21.51%) of the total population.

Next is Kutai Kartanegara Regency with a population of 788,110 (19.66%), Balikpapan City with 738,530 (18.43%), and Kutai Timur Regency with 429,640 (10.72%).

Meanwhile, Mahakam Hulu Regency is the regency/city with the smallest population, at only 38,500 (0.96%).

Administratively, East Kalimantan is divided into 3 cities and 7 regencies, with 10 districts comprising 59 urban villages.
