10 Best Countries for Retirement, Mostly in Europe

According to the 2022 Global Retirement Index (GRI) report, Norway is the best country to spend retirement. This year, the country achieved an index score of 81%.

"Norway has reclaimed the top spot in this year's GRI after four years in third place," the GRI 2022 report stated.

Switzerland came in second in this year's GRI ranking with an index score of 80%.

Iceland ranked third and Ireland fourth, with index scores of 79% and 76%, respectively.

Most of the top 10 countries are located in Europe. Only two countries are from Oceania: Australia and New Zealand.

Here is the list of the top 10 best countries to spend retirement according to the GRI 2022:

1. Norway: 81%
2. Switzerland: 80%
3. Iceland: 79%
4. Ireland: 76%
5. Australia: 75%
6. New Zealand: 75%
7. Luxembourg: 75%
8. Netherlands: 75%
9. Denmark: 74%
10. Czech Republic: 73%

By region, North America still holds the top position as the best region to enjoy retirement in 2022, achieving a score of 69%.

Western Europe follows with a score of 66%, followed by Eastern Europe and Central Asia (49%), Latin America (37%), and Asia Pacific (32%).

The GRI compiled this index using four thematic indicators: health index, material well-being, finances, and quality of life.
