ICW researcher, Wana Alamsyah, stated that the data collection started in 2015 due to a significant increase in the tear gas ammunition budget during the first term of President Joko Widodo.

From 2015 to 2020, the majority of tear gas shootings (23 incidents) occurred during demonstrations against the Omnibus Law.
