70% of East Kalimantan's Population is in the Productive Age Group

President Joko Widodo has designated two regencies in East Kalimantan as candidates for the new national capital. This province, covering an area of 129,000 square kilometers, had a population of 3.62 million in 2018.

Based on the 2015 Intercensal Survey (SUPAS), 2.56 million people, or 71% of the province's population (whose capital is Samarinda), were of working age (15-64 years). Meanwhile, 897,000 or 25% were in the non-working age category (0-4 years), and 158,000 or approximately 4% were in the non-working age category (65 years and older).

For information, the dependency ratio (non-productive to productive population) in East Kalimantan in 2020 was 41.1%. The birth rate was 58.4 per 1,000 population, while the death rate was 20.3 per 1,000 population.
