2023 Per Capita Expenditure: Jakarta Boasts the Highest Standard of Living

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that Indonesia's average real per capita expenditure reached Rp11.89 million per year in 2023.

This figure is up 3.66% compared to 2022, or Rp420,000. Last year's average per capita expenditure was Rp11.47 million per year.

"The average growth from 2022-2023 is higher than the average growth from 2020-2022, which was 2.09%," said Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Statistics, Distribution, and Services at BPS, in an online press conference on Wednesday (15/11/2023).

Per capita expenditure is one of the dimensions that make up the Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI can be used as a reference to see the standard or quality of a decent life for the community.

The province with the highest per capita expenditure is still DKI Jakarta at Rp19.37 million per year. This figure is up 2.35% from last year's Rp18.92 million per person per year.

The province with the second-highest expenditure is the Riau Islands, at Rp14.99 million per capita per year, followed by Yogyakarta Special Region in third place, at Rp14.92 million per capita per year.

Of the 34 provinces, only 9 have a decent living standard above the national average. The remaining 25 are below the national average.

Meanwhile, the lowest per capita expenditure in Indonesia is in Papua (Rp7.56 million), East Nusa Tenggara (Rp8.24 million), and West Papua (Rp8.40 million).
