Through the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) in March 2024, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) mapped the age structure of the Indonesian population aged five years and above who were recent migrants in 2024.

BPS defines recent migrants as those whose place of residence five years ago was different from their current place of residence or at the time the survey was conducted.

The results show that migrants in Indonesia are dominated by those aged 20–29 years, accounting for 31%. BPS calculated that this figure increased from 26.3% in last year's data.

The next largest group is those aged 30–39 years, at 25.9%. These two age groups combined already exceed half of the total recent migrants.

This was followed by DI Yogyakarta (2.8%), West Papua (1.7%), West Sumatra (1.6%), and West Nusa Tenggara (1.5%).

Overall, 9.7% of Indonesia's population are inter-provincial lifetime migrants, while 0.9% of the population aged 5 years and above are inter-provincial recent migrants.
