Indonesian Demonstrations in Late August 2025 Left 7 Dead

Large-scale demonstrations swept across Indonesia at the end of August 2025.

These protests, which were held to oppose government and House of Representatives (DPR) policies, escalated into riots, resulting in at least seven deaths.

The following is a list of those who died during the August 28-31, 2025 demonstrations, compiled from media reports up to September 1, 2025:

1. Affan Kurniawan, Jakarta

Affan Kurniawan worked as an online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol). He died after being hit and run over by a vehicle belonging to the Indonesian Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) amidst the riots in Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

2. Sarinawati, Makassar

Sarinawati was a staff member of the Makassar City DPRD. She died after being trapped inside the Makassar City DPRD building, which was set on fire during the riots on Friday, August 29, 2025.

3. Syaiful Akbar, Makassar

Like Sarinawati, Syaiful Akbar died after being trapped in the fire at the Makassar City DPRD building. He was the Head of Social Welfare Section of Ujung Tanah Sub-district, Makassar.

4. Muhammad Akbar Basri, Makassar

Muhammad Akbar Basri, a public relations photographer for the Makassar City DPRD, also died in the fire at the Makassar City DPRD building. He is believed to have been trapped inside while trying to escape the rioting crowd.

5. Rusmadiansyah, Makassar

Rusmadiansyah worked as an online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol). He died after being beaten by a mob who accused him of being an intelligence officer during the riots in front of the University of Muslim Indonesia campus, Makassar, on Friday, August 29, 2025.

6. Sumari, Solo

Sumari worked as a pedicab driver. He died amidst the riots at Bundaran Gladak, Solo, on Friday, August 29, 2025.

7. Rheza Sendy Pratama, Yogyakarta

Rheza Sendy Pratama, a Communication Science student at Amikom University Yogyakarta, died in the riots in front of the Yogyakarta Special Region Police Headquarters (Polda DIY) on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

As of Monday, September 1, 2025, the police have yet to investigate the cause of his death.
