In the Past Year, 55 Indonesians Died Due to Violence by Law Enforcement Officers

According to a report by the Civil Society Coalition, in the past year (July 2024-June 2025), 55 Indonesian citizens died due to violence perpetrated by law enforcement officials, with the following breakdown:

• Deaths due to extrajudicial killings: 37 people
• Deaths due to torture: 10 people
• Deaths due to wrongful arrest: 8 people

"Some cases that have drawn public attention include the killings of minors, namely Gamma in Semarang, Central Java, and Afif Maulana in Padang, West Sumatra," the Coalition stated in a press release on Friday (August 29, 2025).

The Coalition presented this data as part of its response to the actions of the police force during this week's demonstrations.

Previously, online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan (21) died after being hit and run over by a police armored vehicle during a demonstration near the DPR building in Jakarta on Thursday (August 28, 2025).

"The brutal actions and use of violence by heavily armed law enforcement officials not only violate the principles of democracy and human rights, but also confirm that the government and law enforcement agencies have failed to uphold the mandate of reform, namely to create a state that sides with the people," said the Coalition.
