Regional Language Use in 2024: South Sumatra Highest, Jakarta Lowest

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), 74.32% of Indonesia's population aged 10 and above used regional languages at home and in social interactions in 2024.

This percentage increased compared to 2018 and 2021, which were 73.97% and 74.08%, respectively.

Based on region, the highest use of regional languages was found in South Sumatra, Central Java, North Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, and East Java provinces.

The following are the 10 provinces with the highest percentage of residents aged 10 and above using regional languages at home and in social interactions in 2024:

1. South Sumatra: 96.86%
2. Central Java: 96.64%
3. North Sulawesi: 95.86%
4. South Kalimantan: 95.02%
5. East Java: 94.83%
6. Papua Pegunungan: 94.25%
7. West Sumatra: 94.03%
8. Bengkulu: 93.14%
9. Bangka Belitung Islands: 92.95%
10. Jambi: 90.67%

Meanwhile, Jakarta Province had the lowest use of regional languages. The percentage was less than 6%.

The use of regional languages was also low in Papua and Southwest Papua provinces, as seen in the list of 10 provinces with the lowest percentage of residents aged 10 and above using regional languages at home and in social interactions below:

1. Jakarta: 5.89%
2. Papua: 13.84%
3. Southwest Papua: 17.56%
4. North Kalimantan: 23.21%
5. East Kalimantan: 27.53%
6. Riau Islands: 33.72%
7. Central Sulawesi: 39.64%
8. Southeast Sulawesi: 41.58%
9. West Papua: 43.76%
10. North Sumatra: 44.44%
