Indonesia's Poverty Severity Index Falls in Early 2025, Reaching a New Record Low

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's Poverty Severity Index has shown a downward trend from March 2016 to March 2025.

This Poverty Severity Index illustrates the inequality of expenditure among the poor population.

An index value of 0 means that all poor people have similar expenditure; no group is significantly poorer than another.

However, an index value greater than 0 indicates inequality. The higher the index value, the worse the inequality.

Based on BPS data, from March 2016 to March 2019, the national Poverty Severity Index consistently decreased.

Then, the index value increased from March 2020 to March 2021, coinciding with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The index then fell again following the pandemic recovery, and the decline continued until it reached 0.32% in March 2025, the lowest level in the last decade.
