Geographic Distribution of the Bugis People in Indonesia

The Bugis people originate from South Sulawesi Province. The word "Bugis" itself comes from the phrase *To Ugi*, meaning "Bugis people".

According to a study by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), migration is a characteristic of the majority of Bugis people, particularly for trade, work, and acquiring knowledge.

On the other hand, immigrants from Malay and Minangkabau who migrated to Sulawesi since the 15th century as administrators and traders in the Gowa Kingdom, and who have since become acculturated, are also considered Bugis people.

Based on the 2020 BPS Population Census, the Bugis people are known to live in various regions of Indonesia, although the majority, or 82.03%, of Bugis people born in South Sulawesi remain in that province.

The term "Bugis people" encompasses the Bugis, Ugi, Pagatan, Bugis Pto Ugagatan, Orang Kajang, Ammatowa, Amatoa, and Tolotang groups.

The following are the percentages of Bugis people born in South Sulawesi residing in different locations:

• Province of origin (South Sulawesi): 82.03%
• Other provinces on Sulawesi Island: 7.28%
• Kalimantan Island: 6.58%
• Maluku and Papua Island: 1.94%
• Sumatra Island: 1.08%
• Java Island: 0.85%
• Bali and Nusa Tenggara Island: 0.25%

According to the BPS, this distribution is also supported by the migratory behavior of the Bugis people, with 16.21% being lifelong migrants.

"This means that out of every 100 Bugis people in Indonesia, about 16-17 live in a province different from their province of birth," explains the BPS.
