Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) findings reveal 92 indictments for money laundering in Indonesia between 2017 and 2023.

In 2023, out of 897 corruption defendants, only 17 were charged with money laundering. This is a decrease from 28 indictments in 2022, which was the highest number in the last seven years.

"Is 28 a success? Certainly not, it's still low, at least the number of indictments in 2023 is lower," said ICW researcher Kurniawan Ramadhan in an online presentation of his findings on Monday, October 14, 2024.

Furthermore, ICW found that in 2023, the majority of money laundering cases—11 indictments—were investigated by the Attorney General's Office.

Five indictments were investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and one indictment's investigating body is unknown.

"As the coordinator of corruption eradication, the KPK should set an example for other law enforcement agencies by pursuing the assets of perpetrators and impoverishing them through money laundering charges included in the indictment," wrote ICW in its report.

ICW assesses that law enforcement action against passive actors in money laundering cases remains minimal, both by the KPK and the Attorney General's Office.

ICW urges law enforcement agencies to utilize money laundering charges and maximize the tracing of criminal assets.
