28 Million Jabodetabek Residents Expected to Go Home for Idul Fitri, Majority Departing Four Days Before the Holiday

The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) predicts that approximately 28.4 million residents of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) will travel for the 2024 Eid al-Fitr homecoming (mudik).

Kemenhub estimates the peak outbound flow from Jabodetabek will occur four days before Eid al-Fitr, or April 6, 2024.

This prediction is earlier than the national peak outbound flow, which is forecast for two days before Eid al-Fitr, or April 8, 2024.

An estimated 5.20 million Jabodetabek residents are expected to depart for their hometowns four days before Eid al-Fitr.

This number is projected to reach 4.13 million on the third day before Eid al-Fitr, and approximately 3.78 million on the second day before Eid al-Fitr.

The lowest outbound flow is predicted to occur six days after Eid al-Fitr, or April 17, 2024, with only 45,710 travelers.

Kemenhub also estimates that the majority of Jabodetabek residents will choose to depart for their homecoming between 7:00 AM and 9:59 AM WIB. This number is projected to be 8.67 million people.

"Then, for the return trip, it remains the same as the national (homecoming) flow, choosing three days after Eid al-Fitr, which is Sunday (April 14, 2024), the last day before they return to work," said Head of Transportation Policy at Kemenhub, Robby Kurniawan, in a press conference on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

Kemenhub made this prediction based on a survey conducted from January 29 to February 29, 2024. The survey involved the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), as well as transportation practitioners and academics.

This survey involved 48,107 respondents spread across 38 Indonesian provinces, using an online questionnaire distribution method via social media and SMS blasts, with a margin of error of 0.46%.
