Based on population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the population of South Sumatra Province reached 8.89 million in December 2023.

Palembang City is the most populous area in South Sumatra Province, with 1.77 million inhabitants (19.94%) of the total population.

Next is Banyuasin Regency with a population of 850,020 (9.56%), Ogan Komering Ilir Regency with 779,890 (8.77%), and Musi Banyuasin Regency with 707,290 (7.96%).

Meanwhile, Pagar Alam City is the regency/city with the smallest population, at only 150,880 (1.7%).

Administratively, South Sumatra Province is divided into 4 cities and 13 regencies, with 18 districts comprising 107 urban villages.

Based on marital status, 49.53% of the population of South Sumatra Province is married, while 45.98% are unmarried. The population with divorced and widowed statuses reached 1.08% and 3.4%, respectively.
