Most Indonesian women become pregnant before the age of 25.

According to a survey by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), of all female respondents aged 10-54 years who have ever been married, 94.8% have ever been pregnant.

Of those who have been married and pregnant, the majority, or 46.8%, experienced their first pregnancy between the ages of 20-24 years.

Others experienced their first pregnancy at ages 15-19 years (25.8%), 25-29 years (20.7%), 30-34 years (4.3%), and 35 years and older (1.3%).

A small percentage experienced their first pregnancy at a very young age, namely 10-14 years (0.9%).

According to the Head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), Hasto Wardoyo, the ideal age for women to become pregnant is between 20-30 years.

“[Pregnancy at an age] above 35 years is indeed considered high-risk. Because the peak of human vitality occurs at age 32,” said Hasto, as reported by *Kompas.com*, Wednesday (3/4/2024).

“As people get older, blood sugar levels usually also rise; in such a condition, pregnancy is dangerous for both the mother and the baby,” he added.

Hasto emphasized that the BKKBN does not prohibit pregnancy, but it is important for expectant mothers to be aware of the risks associated with their pregnancy.
