10 Countries with the Highest Suicide Rates in the World

Based on data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), processed by *Our World in Data*, the global suicide rate reached 9 cases per 100,000 people in 2021.

The highest ratio was in Guyana. In 2021, this South American country had 31.5 suicide cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Next was Nauru, a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean with 24.6 suicide cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Other countries in the top 10 include Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Suriname, Eswatini, Lithuania, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and the Solomon Islands, as shown in the graph.

Indonesia ranked 194th out of 203 countries with a ratio of 1.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The countries with the lowest suicide rates in the world in 2021 were Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine, each with only 0.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

However, *Our World in Data* notes that this data may be incomplete, as suicide deaths are not reported in many countries due to local social, cultural, or legal factors.

Into the Light, a suicide prevention and mental health education community in Indonesia, advises individuals with suicidal thoughts to contact their nearest healthcare provider.

"Meeting with a nearby psychologist/psychiatrist has proven effective in handling suicide crises or mental disorders. Furthermore, face-to-face consultations with professionals will guarantee the confidentiality of your personal information," according to Into the Light's website.

"One of the easiest ways to find mental health services is to visit the nearest community health center (puskesmas). According to data from the Ministry of Health, there are now more than 3,000 puskesmas equipped with mental health services," they stated.
