Viral Interfaith Marriage in South Jakarta: What are the Marriage Figures in DKI Jakarta?

Recently, the South Jakarta District Court (PN) reportedly granted permission to an interfaith couple to register their marriage at the South Jakarta City Sub-district Population and Civil Registration Office (Dukcapil). This immediately went viral among netizens, as interfaith marriages have been prohibited in Indonesia.

The sole judge of the South Jakarta District Court, Arlandi Triyogo, granted the marriage application of an interfaith couple with the initials DRS, a Christian, and their partner, JN, a Muslim.

"It is decided, granting permission to the applicants to register their marriage at the South Jakarta City Sub-district Population and Civil Registration Office," said Arlandi, as quoted by Kompas.com, Thursday (15/9/2022).

DRS and JN are one example of a couple who will add to the list of marriages registered in Jakarta this year. So, how many couples married in Jakarta in the last year?

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the number of marriages in Jakarta reached 48,302 in 2021.

East Jakarta recorded the highest number of marriages in the capital city last year, with 14,343 marriages.

South Jakarta ranked second with the next highest number of marriages, at 12,822. This was followed by West Jakarta with 9,214 marriages.

Next, the number of marriages in North Jakarta was 6,867 last year. Then, 4,859 marriages were recorded in Central Jakarta.

Meanwhile, the number of marriages in the Thousand Islands was the lowest in Jakarta in 2021, with only 197 marriages.
