Jakarta Had the Highest Number of Buddhist Followers Nationally in June 2021

Followers of the Buddhist religion in DKI Jakarta are the most numerous compared to other provinces. Based on data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the number of Jakarta residents who practice Buddhism reached 396,910 in June 2021.

This figure accounts for 3.35% of the total population of DKI Jakarta and is equivalent to 19.46% of the total Indonesian population who practice Buddhism.

The next province with the largest number of Buddhist followers is North Sumatra, reaching 356,840 (17.5%) of the total Buddhist population in Indonesia. Then, the Buddhist population in West Kalimantan is 316,570 (15.52%).

The next largest number of Buddhist followers is in the Riau Islands, at 145,910 (7.15%), followed by Banten with 141,640 (6.94%), and then Riau with 135,460 (6.64%). Other provinces with a large Buddhist population include West Java with 98,780 (4.84%), East Java with 72,050 (3.53%), South Sumatra with 67,600 (3.31%), and Bangka Belitung Islands with 64,390 (3.16%).

The total Buddhist population in these 10 provinces reaches 1.8 million (88.7%) of the total Buddhist population in Indonesia, which is 2.04 million.

For information, the Indonesian population totaled 272.23 million in June 2021. Of this number, 86.87% are Muslim, 7.49% are Christian, 3.09% are Catholic, and 1.71% are Hindu. 0.75% of the Indonesian population practices Buddhism, 0.03% practice Confucianism, and 0.04% adhere to indigenous beliefs.
