National Narcotics Trafficking Highest in West Sumatra Village in 2019

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that West Sumatra had the highest national percentage of villages reporting drug trafficking cases in 2019, at 27.92%. It was followed by Riau at 26.35%, East Kalimantan at 23.51%, DKI Jakarta at 22.1%, and North Sumatra at 22.08%.

The Head of the West Sumatra Provincial National Narcotics Agency, Brigadier General (Pol) Khasril Arifin, stated that Ranah Minang has become a drug trafficking location because it has clear and mapped entry points. Marijuana, for example, circulates in Pasaman Regency, brought in from Aceh and Medan. Meanwhile, methamphetamine enters from Riau via Limapuluh Kota Regency.

Based on data from the West Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumbar), drug trafficking cases are dominated by minors. Throughout 2018, 36 suspects in drug trafficking cases were recorded in the 15-17 age range.
